If Only This Once…
You don’t have to watch the news for more than fifteen minutes to hear the word “democracy” spoken. “Iraq is a young democracy,” “America is the world’s greatest democracy,” “America needs to unite with other democracies against radical Islam,” etc., etc., etc.. Now, I understand that using the word “democracy” underlines the simple distinction between a Communist government like Cuba or a Totalitarian government like Iran and our system of government. We have a government that is for the people by the people; they don’t. Got it. However, it is worth pointing out that America is not really a true “democracy;” rather, we are a “republic.” What is the difference? A democracy is nothing more than a majority rule system. Whatever 51% of the people want goes. What if 51% of the people all of a sudden decide that murder is acceptable, or rape, or dangerous drugs? You can see the slippery slope. In fact, a true democracy has never, ever succeeded because the majority of the people can’t always be trusted to do what is right. What we have in the United States of America is a republic, a government based not on majority rule, but instead on laws. As you know, we elect officials to govern and enforce these laws, or if necessary, amend them. These elected officials are supposed to represent, to the best of their ability, the will of the people, and most of the time they do, since generally on most of the issues we as a people have so many different views. There are congressmen that represent liberal America, conservative America, and everywhere in between. The result of this normally, then, is a political stalemate. However, every once in a while an issue pops up that America is quite united on; when this happens it is a gimmie, a no brainer, an obvious course of action for our elected officials, right? Well…usually, that is unless they universally don’t agree with us. Then we have a problem. This is exactly what is going on with the current immigration bill that is being tossed around in the Senate. The purpose of this blog is not to articulate exactly why this bill would be an absolute disaster for America, though it would (no matter what the MSM is telling you). It’s purpose, rather, is just to highlight how out of touch our Senators are in this matter. Even though CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and virtually every outlet of the main stream media will try to spin these polls until they’re dizzy, the fact is that the American people oppose this bill almost 2-1. According to the latest Rasmussen poll (which was the most reliable poll from the last two elections), and I quote from www.rightwingnews.com “69% of voters would favor an approach that focuses ‘exclusively on securing the border and reducing illegal immigration…while just 20% of American votes want Congress to try and pass the immigration reform bill that they are currently about to resurrect.’” Look, George Bush’s 2004 election victory wasn’t considered a close one based on numbers, yet he wasn’t even closing in on the stratosphere of 60% support from the American public, let alone 70%! In fact, the majority of Democrats even support an enforcement only bill by 55%! Democrats! What is the deal? The deal is that the Democratic Senators want the illegal immigrants to keep coming so they can be made citizens, because generally poorer people from backward, third world countries will vote for democratic 90% of the time (ironic isn’t it). Republican Senators don’t want to stop the flow of illegals because they don’t want to lose the support (read: money) from corrupt businessmen who hire illegals so they can pay their workers two cents on the dollar and pocket more profit for themselves. As far as what the American public wants… “who cares,” says the Senate, as President Bush and the MSM nod their heads in approval.
Here are the facts: President Bush’s approval rating is among the lowest of all time due to his stance on immigration (more people actually support winning in Iraq than the MSM wants you to believe; Bush’s horrid approval rating comes as much from conservatives fed up with his spend happy – big government and open borders beliefs than from liberals who want us to surrender to the terrorists ASAP); John McCain’s approval rating dropped 20 points instantly when he voiced his support for the comprehensive bill; Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has an approval rating under 12% because of his immigration stance; Senators are collectively reporting thousands and thousands of calls, emails, faxes, and letters over the last few weeks that are 95-98% against the current immigration bill…and passionately against it. The American people feel betrayed and outraged that their feelings on illegal immigration are being ignored by the Senate…and they’re right. They are tired of seeing the face of America change with every new flood of un-skilled, un-educated, non-English speaking illegal immigrant that comes here with no respect for our country or our laws and with no intention of assimilating, and they are tired of being told either directly or by insinuation by their President, their Senator, or the media that they are racist for feeling that way! Yet the President and the Senate (both parties, save for a few with some common sense and decency) continue to try to push through this wildly unpopular bill in spite of the public outcry. Sigh.
Though not always or even often is it as follows, I stand firmly with the majority of American opinions on this one. I love this country; I am thankful for it, and I want to, at the very least, preserve it as is. This currently proposed immigration bill threatens that preservation. Almost 250 years ago, our forefathers really did fashion the greatest governmental system in the history of the world when they formed these United States of America, and as we did then, frequently still we have some great leaders who properly act as the voice of America’s citizens. It’s regrettable, though, that with this immigration bill, in this one time, our leaders are failing us. It sure would be nice, as great as our republic is, if only in this instance were we a true democracy…because in this case the majority is right. Hmmm…if only this once…
